Why I Started Creating Pet Portraits

(And Why They’re So Special)

I’ve always been known as an ‘arty type’. Drawing, painting, and making have been part of my life since I was tiny. When I’m sketching, that’s when I’m happiest. The world quiets, my mind calms, and it’s just me and my art. It’s a pretty special place to be.

There’s only one thing that probably means more to me than drawing - and that’s dogs. Well, all animals really. I’m an animal person through and through, but dogs have been a particular obsession since I was about three years old.

I always dreamed of illustrating dogs, but as I grew up, my drawing practice faded away. Instead, I found my voice as a writer, eventually becoming a dog copywriter and blogger with an award-nominated blog called Paws and Prada.

Still, the desire to illustrate never truly left me.

Unfortunately, between struggling to carve out time for my passions and my lifelong challenges with consistency, it felt almost impossible to sit down and draw.

That changed when I turned 40, was diagnosed with ADHD, and finally received treatment.

For the first time, I could create the mental space to reconnect with my creativity - and start drawing dogs again. I wasn’t great at first, but with time and regular practice, my skills grew quickly. It wasn’t long before people began asking about commissions, and a thought crept in: Could this be more than just a hobby?

Nine months after my first dog drawing, I made the decision to turn my passion project into a business.

I love drawing all kinds of animals, but custom pet portraits hold a special place in my heart.
Getting a portrait just right matters deeply to me. It’s not simply about creating a likeness - it’s about capturing a pet’s quirks, personality, and spirit.

When I sit down to draw a dog, I’m not just focusing on the detail of their fur or the exact shade of their coat (though I do spend hours on that!). My true mission is to capture the twinkle in their eye, the tilt of their head, the sass in their smirk - all those little things that make your pet so wonderfully unique.

Maybe it’s their cheeky attitude, their sleepy smile, or their bombastic side-eye. I’m not interested in creating just any dog portrait; I want to create your dog, in all their lovable glory.

Each custom piece takes between 8 and 12 hours, as I pour myself into the detail and expression that make the portrait come alive. It's time-consuming - but when that creative hyperfocus kicks in and I’m getting those expressive eyes just right, there’s truly nowhere else I'd rather be.

If you’ve ever wanted to capture your pet’s personality in a timeless portrait, I’d love to create something special for you.
